PRASA Announces Nationwide Train Fare Adjustments Effective, 1 August 2025

After 9 Years, PRASA Confirms New Fares after public and stakeholder engagements.

The Passenger Railway Agency of South Africa (PRASA) has officially announced that new train fares will take effect from 1 August 2025, marking the first adjustment in nearly a decade.

Following long consultations process including public forums and stakeholder engagements between 2019 and 2023. PRASA describes the new prices as part of its “new approved fares nationwide“. The move is intended to align pricing with operational costs, while still offering accessible options for low-income and vulnerable commuters.

Discounts Remain for Off-Peak Hours and Priority Groups

Despite the changes, PRASA confirmed that its off-peak discounts and commuter concessions will remain in place.

Off-Peak Hours: 09:00 AM – 14:00 PM

  • General commuters will still get 40% discount on single and return fares.
  • Pensioners & Military Veterans will get 50% discount with valid ID, force number, or proof letter when purchasing a ticket.
  • School children in uniform will get 50% discount on both single and return tickets, valid at all hours.

These measures seem to aim balance affordability with the financial sustainability of public rail transport across South Africa.
