Gauteng’s High Schools of Specialisation

Gauteng is redefining high school education through a bold initiative: Schools of Specialization (SoS). These government-run institutions prepare learners from Grades 8–12 for high-demand sectors such as engineering, manufacturing, logistics, ICT, and the performing arts. Each school is strategically located to match the economic profile of its surrounding corridor, ensuring that learners acquire skills aligned with local industry needs.

What Are Schools of Specialisation?

Launched by the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE), SoS are public secondary schools offering an enhanced curriculum that blends the national CAPS syllabus with technical, vocational, and academic specialisation. Learners gain practical exposure, industry certifications, and opportunities to work alongside top brands and training providers.

The initiative is a response to the growing demand for skilled artisans, technicians, scientists, and innovators in the province and across South Africa.

Entry Requirements

  • Grade 7 academic performance, particularly in Maths, Science, and English
  • Aptitude for the school’s specialisation area (e.g., Engineering, ICT, Arts)
  • Placement through the GDE online application system
  • Commitment to technical subjects (some humanities subjects may be phased out)

🔮 Looking Ahead

The Gauteng government plans to roll out more Schools of Specialisation to meet future economic demands. MEC Matome Chiloane has reaffirmed the department’s goal to match education with industry needs, empower learners, and fight youth unemployment through skills and innovation.

Schools of Specialisation are no longer just about textbooks and tests they’re about bridging the gap between classrooms and careers. For parents seeking a future-focused education and learners driven by passion and potential, Gauteng’s SoS model could be the golden ticket.
