Free Entry to 21 National Parks for SA National Parks Week in September

South Africans will once again have the chance to explore the country’s breathtaking natural and cultural treasures free of charge, as the South African National Parks (SANParks) marks the 20th anniversary of SA National Parks Week this September.

From 22 to 26 September 2025, most of the 21 national parks under SANParks management will open their gates to the public without an entry fee, with selected parks extending the free access offer to 27 and 28 September. The campaign aims to foster national pride and encourage citizens to connect with the country’s rich biodiversity and heritage.

The official launch event will take place on 21 September at the world-renowned Kruger National Park, where SANParks will host a celebratory programme to kick off the week.

Conservation Meets Community

First introduced in 2006, SA National Parks Week has grown into one of the most popular conservation awareness initiatives in the country, drawing thousands of day visitors each year. The campaign highlights South Africa’s inclusive approach to conservation one that involves communities living near the parks, local businesses, researchers, and tourists in preserving natural and cultural heritage for future generations.

“SA National Parks Week has proved to be a successful campaign that provides education and awareness about South Africa’s inclusive approach to conservation,” SANParks said in a statement. “It offers an opportunity to experience the country’s rich natural and cultural heritage, while also drawing attention to sustainable development made possible through collaborative partnerships.”

Important Details for Visitors

While entry will be free, the offer does not extend to accommodation, guided tours, or other paid activities within the parks. Visitors are encouraged to plan ahead by checking the specific free-access dates for each park, as schedules vary.

Full details, including a list of participating parks and their respective dates, are available on the SANParks website: SANParks Events – 2025 SA National Parks Week Dates.

Encouraging South Africans to Explore

The initiative is aimed particularly at encouraging those who have never visited a national park to take advantage of the free access. Whether it’s the wildlife-rich plains of the Kruger, the dramatic landscapes of the Augrabies Falls, or the coastal beauty of Table Mountain National Park, SANParks hopes the campaign will inspire a deeper appreciation for South Africa’s protected areas.
