The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), in partnership with the University of Pretoria, University of Zululand, and Sol Plaatje University, will host the 6th Annual Emerging and Established African Researcher Training Academy from 28 July to 1 August 2025. A fully virtual, no-cost event set to equip scholars with essential skills for the AI-driven research future.
Running daily from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM, the academy’s theme this year, “Research Excellence Reimagined: Preparing Tomorrow’s Scholars Today,” underscores the accelerating impact of artificial intelligence on every aspect of research from design and analysis to communication and ethical reflection.
“As AI increasingly transforms how research is designed, conducted, analysed, and communicated, the academy will explore how African scholars can engage with these changes while strengthening foundational research skills,” reads an HSRC statement.
Blending Research Foundations with AI Innovation
The academy offers a rare blend of foundational training in research design, academic writing, and data analysis with practical exposure to AI tools and techniques. Sessions will examine pressing questions around intellectual authenticity in an AI-driven world, the balance between automation and human insight, and how researchers can future-proof their skillsets.
Initially launched in partnership with the University of Zululand as an in-person training program, the academy shifted online in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now in its sixth year as a virtual event, it continues to expand participation across African institutions and disciplines.
Empowering Diversity and Lifelong Learning
Aligned with the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation’s (DSTI) vision, the HSRC ensures inclusive access for historically marginalized groups, including women and people with disabilities. The academy actively fosters a culture of lifelong learning and collaboration among Africa’s current and future research leaders.
Dr Bongiwe Mncwango, Chairperson of the Organizing Committee and a senior HSRC researcher, says the academy is more than a training initiative, it’s a strategic platform for innovation:
“It is more than training – it’s a strategic investment in the future of African research. As AI revolutionizes scholarship, African researchers must be equipped to lead with innovation, integrity, and impact,” Mncwango said.
The programme not only supports early-career development but also encourages cross-institutional collaboration to address Africa’s most pressing challenges through research.
